The grapes are grown naturally without the aid of pesticides or chemicals. In order for this method to be successful, the farmer must maintain the soil through regular plowing and applications of organic composts. Biodiversity is encouraged as well as cover crops to help create a stable environment. Certified Organic producers must follow rules and regulations in addition to a certification process administered by Organic certifiers. Producers are certified by the French organizations Qualité France, Ecocert; the Italian organization, Istituto Certificazione Etica e Ambientale (ICEA); and the American, USDA National Organic Program (NOP). To be certified by the USDA, the producer must first be certified by an organization in their home country.
