A question from Kermit Lynch to you…
As regular readers of our newsletter know, Kermit spends a good chunk of his year in France and Italy. He works, he relaxes, he visits friends. One of his absolute favorite places to mix his work and pleasure is on the island of Corsica. He just returned to his Provençal home after spending a week in Corsica visiting our three producers there and enjoying life on the island.
Kermit is always looking for good values and while in Corsica he happened upon something interesting that he told me to ask you (the reader) about.
We import a beautiful Vermentino from Domaine Maestracci called “E Prove Blanc” (the 2008 $16.95). Kermit loves this wine and in the 2009 January Newsletter it was described as “Kermit’s house wine.” While tasting at Domaine Maestracci, Kermit was offered the chance to buy a Vermentino similar to the “E Prove Blanc” but in a five-liter box. Five liters is equivalent to 6 and 2/3rds bottles of wine. We don’t have a price for the five-liter box at this time, but it would certainly be cheaper than a bottle of E Prove. Kermit thinks the wine is a nice tasty dry white and will be a great value.
Please consider the possibilities. You could keep the box in your fridge for a month or so, drinking through it one glass at a time. Or what about a big backyard party, buy a few of the boxes, and keep the wine flowing without opening a new bottle every five minutes?
So let us know, would you be interested in such a package? Leave your comments below!
Absolutely. I love the wine and have no problem with non-traditional containers being used.
I say bring it on! …but it should be quite a bit cheaper. I’d say at $60 you’d have some problems selling it. $35-45 sounds much better.
I’d buy. I’ve rafted whitewater with boatloads of such boxes. Just always wanted a higher quality wine in them.
What’s the harm in trying it? You guys should make its intro at one of the parking lot events – Oysterfest?
Just don’t start packaging Tempier or VT like this, I’ll have to reconstruct the cellar (again)
Sounds absolutely great. How about some others from southern France, not just white?
Terrific idea. I’m in!!
Absolutely would get it! I have had the one in the …er…dark brown, almost bordering on black, box…and it was quite a fine QPR.
This sounds great and I look forward to trying it out!
Sounds fantastic. I would definitely give it a try, maybe a sign of what the future holds for good, inexpensive wine from the “Old World.”
I’d buy it.
You had me at “Five liters is equivalent to 6 and 2/3rds bottles of wine.”
Great idea. Perfect for a party. Just need to think of a way to keep it cold while it’s out.
How perfect it would be for a “house” Rhone or Chianti.
I’d buy.
Absolutely! Please do this. B-in-B is great technology but has been undermined by the poor quality of the wine placed within.
[…] those who balked at screw caps, you’re in deep trouble. Yesterday’s KLWM blog (”Inspiring Thirst“) came with a question from the man himself: “would you buy a beautiful Vermentino […]
I’m not proud, I’d buy it. As Mychal said, you had me at “five liters”. I blogged about this today, adding another question/contest: what to call 5 liters of wine? As for as I know, there’s no terminology (somewhere between Jeroboam/Rehoboam and Imperial Magnum/Methuselah), so I’m asking for clever naming ideas — like Jeroboxam (by way of example). http://bellyuptotheblog.com/blog to leave your ideas…
Without doubt. I suggested that to Kermit a few years ago at Provence Days for rose. Having one of each in the frig would be then next best thing being in southern France.
yesssssssss pleeeease
I’d have to try the wine first, but I have no objection whatever to boxes and to volume. As you say – if it’s good, you get a great price plus the convenience of not having to waste wine in opened bottles…. As the only winedrinker in my household, I appreciate that sort of thing!
Like a lot of things in life, please ponder at what cost does this convenience come to us? Most likely the inner bag containing the wine and its valve are not recyclable thus our landfills will grow more junk. Perhaps this is our distinctly American terroir. No thanks.
Yes, I’d like a box in the fridge.
I can’t believe you don’t do this already. A no-brainer.
If Lynch imports it I’ll drink it. Hopefully some will make its way to Maryland since we can’t get direct delivery here. If it is imported I will lobby the Wine Source here to put it on the shelf.
Most definitely. Sounds perfect for this summer.
Would prefer a Rose.
Definitely would try a box. Great idea all around, provided the unused wine doesn’t oxidize too fast and is reasonably priced.
Probably but with a question — any idea what the shelf life would be? I’ve got to think there would be some effect of drawing down the wine, and that some air gets into the bag so as to start the oxidization process. From the other comments, however, it doesn’t seem like that’s a concern to people. Am I missing something?
I love the idea of a quality wine in a bag in a box. When can I get some? Seriously, hurry up as some of us have been waiting a long time for this!
Count me in… I have been looking everywhere for something like this… And chance we can find a natural, light red in a box someday?
I’d buy it in an Aixois minute.
Put ’em all in a box or a screw cap or a crown cap! Or at least 50%. This educates the consumer rather than preys on consumer ignorance. This provides what is being presented, This upholds the trust.
Appellation Alice has Wine Girl for Hire. I’m hiring Carol Duval-Leroy. Take a look at Carol”s video
and see how Carol upholds the trust.
I love that wine and that producer. Sign me up. I would also buy their rouge in box.
Since I really like the E Prove Blanc, and have had positive experience with wine-in-box before, this seems like a great idea to me. I vote yes. I also think that the Rouge would be terrific.
I am dying to try that wine and yes, yes, yes to bag in box at any cost!
Yes, absolutely! I would love to see more wines offered in this format. It’s better value per price point and it reduces the carbon footprint from a shipping perspective. Love it.
Perhaps I’m biased in that I work for the Boston based distributor of Kermit Lynch wines. I would kill to have a great wine such as the E Prove Blanc to take to my on premise customers. Hey match it with a solid value red or two. While tetrapaks are greener than glass, the idea of real wine in a box rocks! So, please, please consider it. You’ll be surprised with the response. And think of the lower shipping costs!
yes, please yes, please yes, please yes, I will sell it and buy it.
